Advanced Silk Painting with Andra Kay

Sessions 1 and 2:  10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Session 3:  10 a.m. to 2 p.m.




This class is for anyone who has taken a beginning silk class anywhere. We will create silk pieces exploring different techniques for creating texture, painting without resists, and using thickened dye to print or draw. This is a half day workshop - 10 am to 1 pm. Final session 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

No drawing skills required. Snacks and drinks provided.

Session One – 3 Hours

Quick Review – Basic silk painting.

Overview of handouts

Dye vs Paint – effects and finishing

Techniques for stretching silk

Make sample pieces - Textures and Backgrounds

Types of resists

Painting water

3 Salts

Layering with gutta and color

Texture by manipulating the cloth

Hard edge vs soft edge

Using alcohol

Project using some of the techniques above.


Session Two – 3 Hours

Color Wheels

Painting Without resists

Hoop Flower

How to prepare the silk for painting.

Project of your choice – Many images provided



Session Three – 4 Hours

Discussion – Elements of Art/ Principles of Design

Recipe for thickening the dye

Make an abstract scarf using thickened dyes.

Extra time for finishing any project.

Prepare Self-addressed envelope *

*Any dyed pieces will be taken home by the instructor for steaming. You may have them mailed or they can be picked up at the studio when ready.
