Techniques for Enhancing Wheel Thrown Surfaces

This one day demonstration workshop is designed for wheel throwers who wish to learn new techniques for enhancing and decorating the surfaces of their pots. Take your skills to the next level with an exciting intensive workshop as Hsin shares his precision techniques for creating and enhancing whell-thrown surfaces.

You will receive a day of in-depth ceramic demonstration in advanced throwing and decorating techniques. Hsin-Chuen Lin will demonstrate his precision techniques for enhancing wheel-thrown surfaces: sgraffito, how to apply a chattering texture, how to use sodium silicate to achieve a crackle texture, and how to apply roller textures. Topics will include the special challenges of throwing porcelain, throwing tall, spiral wedging, and trimming. Everyone will have the opportunity to make a chattering tool from a hacksaw blade.

Hsin-Chuen Lin grew up in Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan and studied under Wu Rhang Nung, a celebrated pioneer of Taiwanese ceramic art. He received his MFA in ceramics at Univeristy of Iowa. Clay has been Lin's passion for more than 40 years. His inspiration comes from Chinese Shan, Zhou dynasty's bronzes as well as Song dynasty's elegant pottery. He was also influenced by the American contemporary ceramics movement’s focus on the free and spontaneous making of pots. His beautiful vessels are first thrown, then torn, punched, squeezed, decorated, and finally fired, such as raku, saggar, gas, and wood fire depending on what he wants to express. Hsin-Chuen Lin has shown his work nationally and internationally and has won many awards. His work has been featured in books and magazines, including Ceramics Monthly, Clay Times, The Best of Pottery, Ceramic Art in Taiwan, and The Ceramic Design Book. Hsin exhibits nationally and internationally and has won many awards. He sells to select U.S. galleries and at national juried craft shows. His work is in museums and private collections in Taiwan and the US. Hisn has lived in the Bay Area of Californai since 1991. His YouTube instructional videos have surpassed ten million views and are famous throughout the country. Don't miss this opportunity to meet with Hsin in person and receive his individualized instruction.
